Visas, taxes and duty

To enter South Africa, immigration requires that all passengers have a valid passport with at least four blank pages for the issuing of stamps. The passport also needs to be valid for the duration of the stay and six months after departure. Visas are not required for Germany, U.S.A and U.K passengers if their stay does not exceed 90 days. Namibian passengers are not required to have visas if their stay does not exceed 30 days.

Who should apply

Entry permits are issued free on arrival to visitors on holiday from many Commonwealth and Western European countries, as well as Japan and the United States of America. If you are not entitled to an entry permit, you will need to get a visa (also free) from your local South African Embassy. You will need a visa if you (as a passport holder) intend to stay in South Africa for longer than the exemption period of two weeks.

How to apply

If you are subject to visa requirements, you will need to apply for your visa at least 4 (four) weeks before you depart. You will have to await the outcome of your visa application before you depart. You can apply for your visa at your nearest South African Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.

Health Requirements

Please consult your nearest South African embassy for immunisation requirements. No international immunisation is required to enter South Africa, except a valid international yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers who enter South Africa within six days of leaving an infected country. Visitors who travel through or disembark in these countries are advised to be innoculated against the disease before visiting South Africa.  Some areas within southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, are subject to malaria and it is advisable for persons who visit these areas to take prophylactic medication. Cape Town is in a malaria-free area.  Please consult your nearest South African Embassy or travel agent for immunisation requirements or the website of the South African Department of Foreign Affairs.

For detailed information on visas you may visit the South African Department of Home Affairs website or visit the South African Department of Foreign Affairs website.

Taxes and Duty

When leaving South Africa, you are permitted to take up to R 500,00 in South African Reserve Bank notes. A 20% levy is applicable on amounts above R 500,00.
