Electricity

City and town power systems are generally 220/230 volts AC. US-made appliances may need a transformer.

Eskom, South Africa’s state run power utility company, are unable to meet the demands for electricity.  A national campaign was launched to encourage electricity consumers to reduce their electricity consumption.  In addition, when necessary, Eskom have implemented load shedding.  Load shedding tables are published on the Internet and in local media to inform consumers of these expected outages.

"We would like to thank all consumers who heeded our call to use electricity sparingly and apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will be continuing with scheduled maintenance of our generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure until the end of summer, which is critical to ensure optimum performance of the system. We urge all South Africans to save energy in their homes and places of work in order to reduce demand on the electricity system,” says Erica Johnson, Eskom’s Managing Director, Systems Operations and Planning.
